Medical

There are a number of medical conditions that could prohibit you from making a career in flying. If you’re considering a career as a commercial pilot, the first thing you must do is obtain a Class 1 medical certificate. Before paying any money towards a flight training programme, you need to check if you’re fit to fly.

If you are embarking on the Integrated or MPL route you have to have the Class 1 medical in order to begin the course. With the Modular Route, as you start by completing a PPL, you do not require a Class 1 medical and only require a Class 2 at this stage. However, if you are starting your PPL with the intention of completing commercial pilot training, we strongly recommend that you get a Class 1 medical before starting the PPL training.

What tests are required?

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Cholesterol Blood Test
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Haemoglobin Blood Test
  • Hearing
  • Lung Function
  • Medical History
  • Urine Test
  • Vision

If you plan to become a commercial pilot and are looking to study down the modular route, always obtain a Class 1 medical. Depending on your medical fitness, this will usually cost between £600 – £800.
